DENTON |
|
Poised on a hill overlooking the Choptank River, Denton has a picturesque Courthouse Green surrounded by colonial revival style homes and handsome structures that reflect the “Canning Boom” (1895-1919). Since the town’s founding in 1781, the ‘Green’ has been the site of eloquent balls, circuses, baseball games, military parades, hangings, jailbreaks, and fistfights. Errant fireworks celebrating the end of the Civil War nearly destroyed the downtown on July 4, 1865. Today the annual Caroline Summerfest is held on the streets surrounding the courthouse in August.
