Moses and the Hounds

The story of a runaway slave spared in Denton by dogs he once befriended is now memorialized on a new sign on the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom along the Choptank River.

The sign, telling the story of Moses Viney, was unveiled Saturday in Denton’s Crouse Memorial Park before a small audience comprising local officials and honored guests. A reception was held afterwards in the nearby Museum of Rural Life, where a print of Viney’s portrait was presented. – Courtesy of The Star Democrat By DANIEL DIVILIO Staff Writer

Kathy Mackel goes to D.C.

Local lobbyists, including Kathy Mackel of the Caroline County Office of Tourism, descended on Capitol Hill on Sept. 14 hoping to garner congressional support for an interstate initiative to create a national park honoring Harriet Tubman.

Federal legislation is needed to create the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park planned for Maryland in Dorchester, Caroline and Talbot counties, and also in New York, where the famed conductor lived in her later years.  -Courtesy of the Star Democrat, by DANIEL DIVILIO Staff Writer
